Introduction:

Increased recognition of the benefits of cholesterol-lowering therapy in patients at high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) has contributed to broadening of the population of patients considered eligible for treatment. Although several statins are available, they are currently underutilized, and many patients do not receive optimal therapy. A more complete understanding of the properties of the statins, including their pharmacologic and safety profiles, may contribute to more effective use of this class of agents to enable patients to achieve their treatment goals.

Learning Objectives:

After completion of this online activity, participants will be able to:

1. Evaluate the effects of cholesterol-lowering treatment on the risk of major vascular events in high-risk individuals

2. Assess the relative safety of the various current and future statins

3. Compare the major pharmacological features of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) and the influence differences may have on clinical outcomes

4. Explain the need for better lipid control in a wide range of patients, including those with increased risk of CHD

5. Recognize the value of proper dosing of lipid-lowering agents and how this can help better achieve NCEP ATP III goals
